Prof. Christian Hesse - 30 years of research and teaching at the Department of Mathematics

Prof. Christian Hesse retired

Prof. Christian Hesse retired at the end of the summer semester 2024. Prof. Hesse is a well-known German mathematician and has taught at the Institute for Stochastics and Applications (ISA) for over 30 years. He has succeeded in popularizing mathematics through numerous books and media appearances. He has also worked as an expert in the field of electoral law reform at the Federal Constitutional Court.

Christian Hesse received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1987 and has been active in research at renowned institutions, including the Australian National University in Canberra and Tsinghua University in Beijing. In addition to his academic work, Hesse is a prolific author, writing numerous popular books on mathematics, chess and critical thinking. Some of his best-known works are “Why Mathematics Makes You Happy” and “The 101 of Clear Thinking”, which explore mathematical concepts in everyday life. His latest work “Of numbers, people and machines” has recently been published.
