My current research interests relate to the following topics:
- Application-oriented questions
- the analysis of share price developments (keywords: modelling and forecasting of price developments with stochastic processes)
- the cleaning up of erroneous data (keywords: non-parametric poet reconstruction)
- the investigation of systems consisting of many interacting components (keywords: particle sedimentation in liquids)
In the past few years, I have also been working scientifically on the mathematical aspects of electoral systems, especially since the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag asked me for an expert opinion (in German) on the Bundestag election law passed in 2011.
In addition to desirable characteristics, electoral systems can have all sorts of questionable and paradoxical features. These include the so-called negative voting weight, according to which it is possible under certain circumstances that a party loses a seat in the Bundestag if additional votes are cast in a federal state. This characteristic in the 2011 electoral law led to the opposition's constitutional complaint in Karlsruhe. The Federal Constitutional Court had called me in as an expert prior to its 2012 election decision.
I have also been involved in the popularisation of mathematics for many years. This discipline polarizes like no other, and many inaccurate clichés about its admittedly extreme educational products in terms of form and content are circulating. In a series of popular science books, countless lectures and other contributions, I have endeavoured to present their wide-ranging usefulness, their manifold highlights and also the feelings of happiness when dealing with mathematical ideas in a way that can be understood by all.
